GREATER WILMINGTON MENTORING COMMISSION CHARTER

History

On Friday, February 15, 2008 by unanimous consensus Mayor James M. Baker approved the Greater Wilmington Mentoring Commission. This Commission will be charged with exploring ways to increase mentoring involvement in small to medium sized businesses, community, and education involvement.

Mission and Vision

Our Vision is that every youth who needs a mentor is provided with one so that they may realize their full potential with a hope of being a fulfilled and contributing member of the Wilmington community and global economy.

In recognition of the importance of positive role models and life coaches in order to realize our vision for the youth of the Greater Wilmington Area, this group of community citizens, business, education, and civic leaders come together for this cause: To advocate and support the volunteer mentoring of youth, both in schools and community settings, in the Greater Wilmington Area, through the formulation of strategies and through leveraging of both human and financial resources.

Membership

Up to twenty members will serve on the GWMC. Members may begin serving with majority approval of current Sub-Committee members. This number may need to be adjusted as Chapters of the GWMC are established.

Members can be from any sector of the business and education community, public or private, and may be active or retired. They may be appointed through nomination by a current GWMC member or by volunteering through a current member of the GWMC, BMA, DSCC, DMC, DMC Office and City of Wilmington. There are no official credentials required, just a passion for mentoring and a willingness to serve the Greater Wilmington Community.

One staff member from the DMC Office and one staff member from the Office of the Mayor will be assigned to the GWMC and have voting privileges but will not be considered one of the twenty appointed members. Any additional attendees from the DMC Office and Office of the Mayor Office will serve in an advisory capacity. A DMC representative will be responsible for recording, preparing and distributing meeting minutes as official record to the members.

A DMC representative will support all of the efforts of the GWMC through close collaboration and administrative support.

GWMC members will be appointed to serve for five-year terms. They may be reappointed at the end of their term. There is no limit to terms of service.

There are no set times to make appointments. Appointments will be made when vacancies occur.

Members may resign at any time but will be asked to replace themselves, if possible.

Representatives from mentoring development agencies/organizations or mentoring programs are welcome to attend GWMC meetings in an advisory capacity after requesting to do so through the Delaware Mentoring Council. The DMC, in cooperation with the GWMC, reserves the right to limit the number of advisory attendees at any one meeting. Any mentoring development agency/organization or program requesting attendance is encouraged to follow the ten basic standards for safe and effective mentoring programs and share with the GWMC any business, education or community contacts that they may have for statistical and outreach purposes. Any business, education or community mentoring program requesting attendance will be listed on the GWMC Mentoring Database which is updated regularly by the Delaware Mentoring Council. Representatives from mentoring agencies/organizations will have no voting rights in GWMC decisions.
