STATEWIDE SUPPORT FOR THOSE WISHING TO MENTOR OR START A PROGRAM
The Delaware Mentoring Council advocates for the mentoring of children in our schools and communities with the ultimate goal of providing a mentor for every child who needs one.
Youth who benefit from mentoring become well-adjusted, responsible, contributing members of society.
Mentoring is a one-to-one relationship of consistent contact between a volunteer and a child. The relationship sets out to build the child's self-esteem, teach life, academic skills and to encourage the avoidance of negative behavior, so that the child grows into a productive adult.
The Delaware Mentoring Council (DMC) is a coalition of mentor programs, local corporations and businesses, government agencies and organizations committed to providing mentors to youth in need throughout the State of Delaware.
Established by former Governor Tom Carper in 1998, the Delaware Mentoring Council comprises representatives from education, government, businesses and mentoring service providers with the common goal of increasing the impact of mentoring across the state.
The Delaware Mentoring Council:
The following is a message from the Lt. Governor's official website
One of my goals as Lieutenant Governor will be to encourage Delawareans to mentor children in our public schools. Mentoring provides not only much needed tutoring for children who may be struggling, but a caring and reliable supporter.
In addition to encouraging individuals to become mentors, I also am recruiting business to partner with specific schools. Not only will this provide a source of mentors, but my hope is that it can benefit schools in other ways as well, including finding ways to keep schools open into the evenings and weekends so they can serve as locations for more community activities.
